Includes Matched $6,397 Rwanda, the most densely populated country in Africa, still contends with the social and economic scars of the deadly genocide that raged within its borders in the mid-1990s. The genocide has combined with the HIV/AIDS pandemic to create a crisis of orphaned Rwandan children and widowed women. With 60 percent of Rwanda’s population living below the poverty line and only 23 percent of the adult population having access to financial services, residents often find their potential checked by a lack of capital.
In response, some seek to save their own funds to begin a small enterprise but must resort to hiding their money at home, where it remains vulnerable to theft or deterioration. Others may attempt to borrow a small sum but find their options limited to loan sharks whose exorbitant interest rates perpetuate the cycle of poverty. Their efforts thwarted, many simply get by, eking out a meager living or subsisting on handouts from others. But more than just a way to earn money, work is a blessing designed by God. Scriptures from the Old Testament to the New identify work as God’s plan for our provision, and when a capable individual lacks the opportunity to work, this departure from God’s plan creates dependence, shame, and despair, distorting that person's view of themself and others.
By C.H. Spurgeon
Why does God allow so many of his children to be poor? He could make them all rich if he pleased; he could lay bags of gold at their doors; he could send them a large annual income; or he could scatter round their houses abundance of provisions, as once he made the quails lie in heaps round the camp of Israel and rained bread out of heaven to feed them. There is no necessity that they should be poor, except that he sees it to be best. "The cattle upon a thousand hills are his" - he could supply them; he could make the richest, the greatest, and the mightiest bring all their power and riches to the feet of his children, for the hearts of all men are in his control. Founded in 1997, HOPE International (HOPE) is a Christian faith-based non-profit organization focused on alleviating physical and spiritual poverty through microenterprise development. HOPE believes that microfinance can be a powerful force in changing the world for the better and that loving people as Christ loved others means caring for both physical and spiritual needs. HOPE practices a holistic approach to poverty alleviation. Microcredit and basic business training enable individuals to build businesses and break free from physical poverty. Clients find that their increased income enables them to provide more nutritious and regular meals as well as improved housing and education for their children.
The bumpy, narrow road to Murehe Parish in eastern Rwanda is flanked by fragrant groves of flowering coffee trees. Coffee beans sun-dry on blankets in the front yards of mud-brick homes. These groves aren't large enterprises but rather small, homegrown opportunities for those with a bit of land and a talent for farming.
For Marie Jeanne Mukagwiza and the fellow members of her HOPE International savings group, in partnership with the Anglican Church, coffee farming has opened many doors. Before forming the group in 2002, Marie Jeanne says she saved her money under her mattress or stored it in a cow’s horn—and while she explains that each group member had her own way of saving, she suspects most had no extra money to save...
